Ronnie Bell made his debut for the R.U.C. on Tuesday 18th.
April 1972 against
Dunmurry Rec. in the 1st Division of the N.I. amateur League, playing along
side him was the great Joe Meldrum.
The following season he was to score 48 goals and play a leading role in the
R.U.C. winning the Barron Cup as Amateur League Champions for the second
time. This was to attract the attention of Linfield who duly signed him. Over the
next five seasons he was to make 124 Senior appearances for Linfield and
score 47 goals. In the 1976/77 season he was leading scorer with 23 goals.
Returning to the R.U.C. in September 1978 he made his return debut alongside
Gary Macartney.
Another outstanding season saw him score 51 goals including
two in the Irish Intermediate cup Final when the R.U.C. defeated Downpatrick
Rec. at Castlereagh Park.
Further Int. Cup honours came his way when the R.U.C. defeated Queens in
1980 when he also set a goal scoring record within the R.U.C. with 56 goals in
the one season; a record he still holds and which is unlikely to ever be broken.
Bell also gained Junior International Honours against the Republic of Ireland and
Scotland as well as representing the British Police in the European Police
Championships and the Irish League “B” Division.
In 1980/ 81 season he scored a further 24 goals as his illustrious career came
to an end. |
