Legends - Denis Moloney

Denis Moloney

Like many sportsmen of his generation Denis Moloney was not only an outstanding athlete but also a fine footballer with a great left foot and a blistering turn of speed.

As an athlete he was at his peak in the period from 1944 -47 when he won Northern Ireland Championship sprint doubles on four occasions; he also did the double at the P.A.A. championships in 1946.

On the soccer field he was an outstanding left winger representing the R.U.C. on many occasions whilst also playing for Cliftonville and Brantwood. One of his great memories was representing the R.U.C. against a selected North of Ireland Army Team at Grosvenor Park in March 1944 with the Police winning 3-1 and Moloney scoring one of the goals.

Some years later he was a member of the R.U.C. team who made their debut in the Amateur League in August 1956 against the 49thth. O.B.

Retiring from playing in 1959 he was immediately appointed as the first manager of the R.U.C. II guiding them to win the Cochrane Corry Cup in 1964/65; John Lunn Cup (2B) in 1965/66, Co Antrim Junior Shield 1965/66, R.U.C. Cup (2c) in 67/68. In 1969 Moloney was subsequently appointed to succeed Davy Watton as manager of the R.U.C. then playing in the First Division of the Northern Ireland Amateur League. He proceeded to win the League and the Barron Cup on two successive seasons 1970/71 and 71/72.

A Constable in Queen St. most of his career he retired from the R.U.C. in 1973 to manage the Police Sports Club. Sadly he was to die with his wife Pearl in the Kegworth Air crash on the 8th. January 1989. An absolute gentleman and a great all round sportsman he made an enormous contribution to Police Sport and the development of the Police Soccer Club over four decades.
